![]() At least all the bay area agencies finally accepted clipper as one option. This is a typical American and Bay Area problem where different political jurisdictions all just do their own things rather than being forced into coordinating or having the same rules. It is weird that Muni offers passes at different, reduced costs through their app rather than through clipper. You can get around everywhere without riding a cable car since they're a tiny part of the Muni system. The individual cable car rides are $8 since it's an old, expensive system and rolling historical landmark and really mostly ridden for fun. Muni has the same individual rides fares on both their own app and clipper ($2.50). Most others you just tag clipper when boarding for individual rides. ![]() Bart and CalTrain need tagging in and out. I believe Golden Gate Transit buses require tagging when boarding and when exiting. Also, some different vehicle types might charge differently, but Google maps is good about indicating the fare in the trip planner, in my experience. There are many agencies for political reasons, not user reasons.Įach transit agency might charge a slightly different amount, but clipper works on all of them. The Bay area regional transit agencies look a lot like the county map ( ), though not exactly. Most visitors will just add value in and use the clipper app or buy and use the physical card and add value in physical locations like the machines at most Bart and Muni stations. The other transactions happen right away (including Autoload). I believe the only transaction where adding money to clipper takes days is adding value from the clipper web site to a physical card. Adding at a retail location will usually accept cash, also. Or if you preloaded with cash - it registers the transaction at the first tap of the card.īart has vending machines to add value for clipper and at least some of the machines accept cash. If you had done this earlier and already had a card, you can add cash at the available machines as well. Or once in the City, at many drug store locations. If you wanted a physical card, they can be purchased from machines at most BART stations, including the airport. So if you wanted to buy a 7-day pass and then also add cash to cover BART fare. I don't believe there is a delay if you do a one-time load of cash. ![]() Historic streetcars head from above ground at Embarcadero to get to Fisherman's Wharf, or there is always a cab line in front of the Hyatt hotel which is right above the BART station.Īs for the Clipper Delay - I believe the delay is only when you select auto-load. Not super easy if you have large luggage. This does not cover BART.īART is regional transportation that covers a lot of the Bay Area - so you can take it from the airport to Embarcadero station (the last San Francisco stop before it crosses the Bay) - then you'd have to switch to something else. That said you can get a 7-day Visitor Passport for Muni (this covers busses, metro trains, historic streetcars, and cable cars). If there's more than one of you I'd suggest skipping public transport to your hotel as BART doesn't go to Fisherman's Wharf, so you'd have to take multiple forms of transport. It's kind of confusing because of the app/card differences and also the money auto-load versus doing it at a machine. ![]() Is it very easy to find either a Bart machine/service center OR Clipper card machine/shop, I am able to get the get and be able to charge the card with some money, so that I can use the card immediately?ģ) To avoid the $5 fee for a refund, what would you recommend to me? Recharging the Card day by day at a suitable shop? On the other side you have to pay a fee of $5 ifyou want to get a refund and have budget left on your accountĢ) I will come by plane from Phoenix. But I got different information regarding how fast the charged money on the cards are available.ġ) Would you recommend either the plastic card or the app when considering that I am a tourist for 7 days only and based on the fact, that I directly would like to use the Clipper Card?Ĭlipper Card service said, that charging money via the app can last up to 5 working days until the money is available. I learned that there are both plastic Clipper Cards and an App. I will arrive at SF airport and directly need a public transport connection to Fisherman Wharf. I already researched a lot, but for european people the public transport system is a bit tricky ) Just to give you an example in Munich you have one app and you can get tickets for all public transport, no need of different ones when for example using bus and metro. ![]()
